GeoSonic has developed field-proven systems for operating safely in areas affected by elevated dose rates, radiological ground contamination, or both. Where required, fully integrated containment systems capture waste arisings for controlled handling and appropriate disposal. New techniques and tooling are thoroughly trialled in controlled environments before site deployment, providing confidence under the nuclear sector’s demanding levels of scrutiny.
Our specialist capabilities include forming inclined boreholes in highly contaminated ground without returning tooling to the surface. These techniques can eliminate drilling-derived waste entirely while enabling the safe installation of specialist radiological instrumentation.
GeoSonic has also collaborated with clients and industry stakeholders to develop novel tooling and methodologies for decommissioning legacy wells that presented significant environmental liabilities and potential contamination pathways. This work earned a nomination for Equipment Innovation at the 2026 Ground Engineering Awards.
Further achievements include the successful installation of advanced multilevel monitoring wells to characterise complex hydrogeological conditions beneath one of the most contaminated buildings in the Western world. These systems provide detailed subsurface information while maintaining rigorous control over safety, waste and environmental impact.
