Poor Sample Recovery

GeoSonic Drilling combines sonic and rotary capability to deliver efficient, adaptable ground-investigation solutions across the UK. Sonic drilling provides rapid penetration through difficult ground, clean operation and high production rates while recovering highly representative samples and clearly defined strata boundaries.

Our multidisciplinary rigs support a wide range of established geotechnical testing and sampling techniques. Automated trip hammers and compliant drill rods enable Standard Penetration Tests to be undertaken using recognised procedures. Piston sampling, vane testing and other in-situ techniques can also be incorporated without vibration, with careful consideration given to borehole diameter, sample volume and equipment compatibility.

For undisturbed open-tube sampling, GeoSonic uses controlled hydraulic feed to advance the sampler in a continuous static push. Vibration is not applied, ensuring the process follows modern standards and protects sample quality. We also deploy specialist core barrels and semi-rigid liners where they provide genuine benefits, including improved preservation of sample structure and macro-scale features in soft or sensitive sediments.

Our expertise allows tooling and techniques to be tailored to changing geological conditions. A project may begin with sonic drilling through fused materials or superficial deposits, transition to lined sampling through soft alluvium, and finish with rotary coring in competent rock. This targeted approach avoids blanket specifications and ensures that the most appropriate method is used at every depth.

GeoSonic rigs can undertake both sonic and rotary drilling, reducing the need to mobilise multiple rigs. This flexibility is particularly valuable where weathered rock, weakly cemented formations or variable ground make the optimum technique difficult to predict.

During a recent investigation within the Chester Formation, GeoSonic mobilised both sonic and triple-tube rotary tooling. Sonic drilling successfully reached the scheduled 30-metre depth while retaining the ability to switch techniques if ground competency changed. This combination of technical knowledge, adaptable equipment and experienced operators enables GeoSonic to maximise drilling performance, sample quality and value for every project.
